Lessons

During the lockdown of 2020, the Louisiana Endowment or the Humanities (LEH) began construction of the Helis Foundation John Scott Center. Unlike any in the Gulf South, the center will be a hub for integrated arts and humanities programming. It will also house the largest collection of artwork by Ayo’s Father, John T. Scott. As part of the Arts Council of New Orleans's third iteration of their Unframed project, Ayo Scott created a mural at LEH’s headquarters at 938 Lafayette Street in New Orleans that pays homage to his late father and MacArthur Fellow John T. Scott and is an ode to generations of New Orleanians, with depictions of his father’s well-known public sculptures Spirit House and Ocean Song, and his daughter, Phoenix dressed as Wonder Woman.

The Unveiling of Lessons was celebrated with a Pass It On: Closed Mic featuring Poet Laurette Mona Lisa Salloy, young phenom Akilah Toney, and music by SmoothCat&theNinthLife.

Check out some shots of the work in progress and the unveiling ceremony by Devin Ball, Christa Rock, and Andrew Bui.
